Most restaurant sites open with a photograph of a plate. This one opens with hands working, someone mid-preparation, in a real kitchen, at the exact moment the food is still being made.

That choice set the tone for everything after it.

The idea

Uzbek hospitality has a word for the shared table: dastarkhan. It is not a menu concept, it is a social one, the table is the point, the food is what happens on it.

So the site is organised as a story with chapters rather than a catalogue with sections. "Gather around the dastarkhan" is the headline; "Fire. Patience. A table for everyone." is the first chapter. The menu comes later, because by then you want it.

What that changed

A serif display face, not a sans. Restaurant sites reach for clean modern sans by default. A high-contrast serif carries warmth and age, which is the actual product here.

Amber on deep teal. The palette came out of the photography, the gold of fried pastry and rice against the cool green tile of a working kitchen. Picking accents out of the imagery rather than from a palette generator is why it feels of a piece.

Chapters with numerals. Roman numerals and chapter headings give a long scroll a spine. You always know how far in you are.

What I would change

The film section needs real footage. It is built for a slow, quiet clip of the kazan and currently carries a placeholder, the layout is doing work the content has not caught up with yet.
